Thoughts and Memories from Friends

A Tribute to Martin Croft from the Manchester Data Platform User Group (repeated here)

One of our co-organisers was Martin Croft. We sadly lost Martin on 23rd August after a long battle with cancer.

Martin began his career as a DBA at HML and later moved to Swinton Insurance where he progressed to become a DBA Manager. After leaving Swinton Martin successfully moved into contracting for a number of years before his diagnosis forced him to retire.

Martin loved a good SQL script and automating tasks to make life easier. One of his many skills was reducing SQL licencing costs at customers!

Martin was also known for his sense of humour and practical jokes. Martin started off as an attendee at the usergroup, then while working at Swinton he was part of the group which hosted the meetings, in 2016 he became co-organiser. He has continued to run the group with Paul and Ian.

Over the last two years Martin was still very active in the group despite his diagnosis. Martin was part of the organising committee which ran two successful SQL Saturdays in Manchester in 2017/2018.

Over the years Martin had been a speaker, attendee and helper at SQL Bits and other Community events, he never hesitated to share his knowledge with others in the SQL community.

Martin was a husband, father and good friend to many people in the SQL community.

Martin was cared for by St Catherine’s Hospice https://lnkd.in/eH4H7pv
